Röntgen was born on 27 March 1845 in Lennep, Prussia, the only child of a merchant and cloth manufacturer. In 1848, he moved with his parents to the Netherlands, rendering him stateless. After being unfairly expelled from Utrecht Technical School in 1865 for a caricature he did not draw, he passed the entrance examination at the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, becoming a mechanical engineering student. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in 1869 and was the favorite student of Professor August Kundt. In 1895, while investigating electric discharge through vacuum tubes at the University of Würzburg, Röntgen noticed a faint shimmer from a barium platinocyanide screen placed near a Crookes–Hittorf tube covered with black cardboard. He termed the unknown rays 'X-rays.' He saw the first radiographic image—his own flickering ghostly skeleton on the screen—and later took a radiograph of his wife Anna Bertha's hand; when she saw her skeleton, she exclaimed 'I have seen my death!' His original paper was published on 28 December 1895. He refused to patent his discovery, wanting society as a whole to benefit. Röntgen married Anna Bertha Ludwig in 1872; they adopted one child, Josephine Bertha Ludwig, after her father died in 1887. He was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. After World War I, inflation left him bankrupt, and he died of colorectal cancer on 10 February 1923 in Munich. His personal and scientific correspondence was largely destroyed per his will.
